Generous defaults, simple billing, fast snapshots. Their cloud-init metadata layer is well-behaved with our hardening — we leave it untouched so first-boot keys still work for you.

Best for

Personal projects, agencies, low-to-mid-traffic SaaS.

Worth knowing

Default firewall rules are off — opening UFW is exactly the kind of work you're paying us to do.

Long-running favourite

Linode shared and dedicated CPU. Ubuntu 20.04 24.04, Debian 11/12

Reliable, predictable performance. The StackScript layer is fine but we don't use it — every customer gets the same manual baseline so your handover document matches everyone else's.

Production web apps that value stable IOPS.

Worth knowing

Region selection matters more than on DO; pick one close to your users.

Hard to beat for raw VPS value. We've hardened many Hetzner boxes and they're consistently fast. Their snapshot pricing is the most reasonable in the market for keeping rollback points.

Best for

Anyone in Europe or anyone shopping on price.

Worth knowing

No US West or APAC regions yet (only US East). Latency-sensitive apps for those markets should look elsewhere.

Vultr

A solid alternative to DO with broader geographic coverage. The High-Frequency CPU plans are the right choice for most web workloads.

Apps that need a node close to specific markets.

Worth knowing

IPv6 is disabled by default on some images — we enable it in UFW rules, but ask your provider to enable IPv6 routing if you need it.

AWS Lightsail

AWS, simplified

A reasonable on-ramp to AWS without the full IAM/VPC complexity. Network is solid, snapshots are easy, and the static IP feature is included. Our hardening is the same as for any other VPS.

Best for

Teams already on AWS who want one or two simple boxes.

Worth knowing

Lightsail firewall is separate from UFW. We configure both so you have defence in depth.

OVHcloud

European stalwart

VPS, Eco / Comfort / Elite tiers. Ubuntu 20.04 24.04, Debian 11/12

Long-running provider with a wide product range. Their Anti-DDoS protection at the network edge is genuinely useful and we make sure your firewall rules don't conflict with it.

Best for

EU-resident apps, GDPR-sensitive data.

Worth knowing

Default boot images sometimes ship with extra services; we'll disable anything you don't need.

Contabo

Budget-friendly

VPS S/M/L/XL. Ubuntu 20.04 24.04, Debian 11/12

You get a lot of CPU and RAM for the price. We've hardened plenty of Contabo boxes; they work fine for the kind of small-to-mid web workloads our customers run.

Best for

High-RAM use cases on a tight budget.

Worth knowing

Network performance is more variable than DO/Hetzner. If you need predictable I/O for a database, pick a different provider.
